Software Engineering
The department of Software Engineering (SWE) is the latest addition to the college of computer and information sciences. It was founded on 8/5/1427H as an evolution of the department of computer technology. The study plan of the SWE bachelor program was adopted by the board of the college of computer and information sciences on 14/4/1428H and was approved by the council of the University on 4/6/1428H. The first batch of SWE has been graduated in summer 1432H (July 2011).
Software engineering, an engineering discipline strongly rooted in computing, is about creating high-quality software in a systematic, controlled, and efficient manner. Consequently, there is an important emphasis in software engineering on analysis and evaluation, specification, design, implementation, maintenance and evolution of software. In addition, there are issues related to management quality, novelty creativity, standards, individual skills, teamwork and professional practice that play a vital role in software engineering.
Vision
The SWE program aims to become the top education program in Software Engineering at the national, regional, and international levels.
Mission
The SWE program is committed to produce highly qualified software engineers that serve the society needs and contribute to transform the society into a Knowledge Society.

Graduation Project
The graduation project is an important part of the software engineering program. It gives the students a unique chance to apply, implement and execute a variety of skills, theories and concepts they learn in the different courses. The students also discover how these things are interacting in reality. Therefore, the students are provided with the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills before completing formal studies. The graduation project is intended to be intensive, active learning, requiring significant effort in the planning, design and implementation, as well as preparation of a substantial final written report.
The graduation project is divided into two parts, namely Project I and Project II which are taken in separate semesters. The focus in Project I is on project planning, requirements specification, analysis and design. The focus in Project II is on implementation, testing and quality assurance, and project documentation.
A critical component of the project will be the substantial feedback provided to the students. The feedback anticipated should be a learning tool in itself. The feedback process will begin with the inception phase of the project, wherein students will receive significant input from their advisors on the project objectives and the project plan. Students will be required to give bi-weekly written status reports to the Graduation Project Committee and to attend periodic face-to-face review sessions with the project advisor, all of which should ensure a continuous open dialogue throughout the project.
